Ben Elton plays D&D

No really. With Steve Jackson, Ian Livingstone, and... who are the other two guys? I recognise the guy in the white shirt (I think).

Thanks to Gorgonmilk for finding this.

[Update: You can tell I've not done much blogging over the past few months - Orlygg (of Realm of Chaos 80s) posted this video nearly one month ago...]

  1. This is literally the best thing I have ever seen. Though I do think Ben Elton is a little condescending of the hobbyists throughout...mind you some of them don't help themselves!...Frothers!

    I can't believe this is 1984!!

  2. Of course, the DM is the late Albie Fiore, author of two of the most highly regarded adventures in White Dwarf (the Licheway and Halls of Tizun Thane) - and the brief scene of him designing a dungeon with the care and attention of a draftsman reminds me that I learned from his obituaries that he was, indeed, an architect.

The guy in the white shirt looks a bit like Graeme Davis, doesn't he?

    1. It's actually Jervis Johnson, designer of Blood Bowl, Adeptus Titanicus, Space Marine, etc. His a lot taller than I am and has a much better-looking voice.

    2. Cheers Graeme. I hope the police never ask me to identify a man in a lineup.

  3. That's funny, I got around to watching these just the other day after Orlygg(?) put them up a while back. Elton's tone is a bit off and that Tarry bloke is a world class tool but I loved the episode. Apparently that LARP place is still in business. Just looked at a photo of Graeme Davis, I think it's him.

  4. Great stuff all around. I might have to steal that "little people kidnapping" trap.

I think the mystery player might be a young Jervis Johnson, perhaps?

  5. That's a great video but god, it just reminds me how much I hate Ben Elton.

    1. Thing is, Ben Elton taking the piss out of Yoof TV is exactly the same as Ben Elton presenting Yoof TV. I honestly can't tell the difference between South of Watford and Nozin Around:

    2. That's because Ben Elton just doesn't really know what he's doing. He's just a ranty upper-middle class nitwit with a grotesquely over-inflated sense of his own intelligence.

  6. That's amazing!
Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson playing together... priceless.
I also think the guy in the white shirt is Jervis Johnson, with his characteristical bass voice.

  7. What gets me is the highly enthusiastic Ian Livingstone describing D&D in 1984 is almost exactly the same as the highly enthusiastic Ian Livingstone describing D&D in 2010, but with less hair.

  8. I passed the link on to Steve and Ian, and the comment came back that they were great memories except for the hairstyles!

    1. Everyone laughs at my youthful haircuts (mid nineties), but I just wish that I had hair these days...

But here's to Steve and Ian, who's fault this all is!
