Oldhammer 40K Marine Squad, part one.

In preparation for this Coop's Rogue Trader Space Marine tactical squad free-for-all at this summer's Oldhammer Day being hosted by Foundry Miniatures, I thought I'd scour eBay for some 'beakie' Marines. I had considered using the something else - even thinking of assembling a bargain squad using the miniatures from Space Crusade, but I figured, 'hey, it's just 10 miniatures, I'll pay a little to get the 'right' models. So I run a few searches, watch a few auctions, and I manage to pick up 4 sprues - enough to make 8 Space Marines - of 1991 vintage plastic while at the same time defying the trader-inflated prices for old gaming material. Earlier in the week I had missed out on a Bugman's Cart that went for £11 (it was hidden in a bunch of other unidentified stuff), all because I was having a conversation with my wife and so forgot to 'snipe'. Priorities, man! So winning these was a nice way to get my Oldhammer 40K Space Marine 'warband' up and running.

And for £5.50! £5.50! All I need now is a vintage metal Captain and Heavy Weapon Marine and I've got a squad, probably for about £10. Vintage gaming is budget gaming!

  1. Doesn't get much better than that. Plenty of people seem unaware of the value these things can have.

  2. Actually, I had no idea how much traders were selling the same sprues for. I just thought, "yeah, I'll pay a couple of quid per miniature", and put in my maximum bid (naturally, with 10 seconds to go). I figured if they went higher I'd just go the Space Crusade route, or even buy contemporary plastics.

Having since seen that traders are trying to get a tenner per sprue, or more, my clippers and glue have hesitated. Should I sell them on, I thought? Momentarily. But these have no value to me *as pristine sprues*, only as potential gaming pieces.

  3. Nice find - I never had any RT01 Marines although did assemble a few of my mates when he had a couple of boxes.

    1. By the Emperor, for rank and file models these boys are bastard to assemble into any pleasing poses. At least compared to contemporary plastics.

      Oldhammer cred draining away...

  4. What's up Andy? It's been quiet here. I hope all's well. There are few blogs I've enjoyed reading as yours recently, for the blend of materials and ideas. My mind keeps drifting back.

I sometimes think we need a better means of batting loose ideas about than any of the tools we have available at the moment, beyond being in the same geographical space at any rate.

    1. I'm still around, just been off the web for a few weeks as I put in a whole heap of consultancy work before the end of my contract.

I agree re: blogs (and fora, Google+, etc.). Everything is both ephemeral and permanent - all our ramblings are permanently searchable, yet 'conversations' drift off unfinished as they are pushed down the page.
